EGYM Genius Product Updates
EGYM Genius Updates
This is an overview of all EGYM Genius product updates.
2024 – CW 44
Challenge: In workout sessions, similar exercises were sometimes assigned on consecutive days, e.g. 2-3 rowing exercises for the upper back.
Solution: We improved our exercise meta-data and selection logic to avoid assigning exercises that are too similar for a given muscle group. This means that users should receive fewer similar back-to-back exercises.
2024 – CW 43
By improving the relationship between EGYM strength tests and workout data, we can enhance the weight recommendations to be even more accurate (min. 10% accuracy gain) across all exercises. An additional focus has been put on dumbbell exercises to further improve the weight suggestions.
Challenge: For members, it can be challenging to understand how Genius personalizes their workout and how it connects to our their BioAge.
Solution: If the member has already performed a strength test before starting the Genius flow OR if they return to the Fitness Hub after the strength test, the Fitness Hub will highlight their strength BioAge during the onboarding.
2024 – CW 42
Challenge: Analog flexibility exercise suggestions were inconsistent, and sometimes even not recommended, although they were present in a given gym’s equipment inventory.
Solution: We’ve made improvements to the Genius algorithms, so that analog flexibility exercises are recommended, and preferred when selected. In Genius training programs, these exercises are also be assigned back-to-back at the beginning of a workout, so that the user can stay in the same gym area and be more efficient.
2024 – CW41
Challenge: The number of sets per exercise for beginner and advanced users was roughly the same i.e., 2-3 sets. However, more advanced users require more volume per exercise to make progress towards their fitness goals.
Solution: We’ve made improvements to the Genius algorithms so that the volume of sets per exercise ranges between 2-3 sets for beginners up to intermediates, and up to. 4-5 sets for more advanced users over a 60 min session. For longer sessions, we also favored adding sets to the most important exercises, before adding too many other exercises. In shorter sessions, a minimum of 2 sets per exercise is also respected.
Challenge: During the Genius onboarding at the Fitness Hub or via the Trainer app, selecting a muscle group to exclude only excluded strength exercises that involved the selected muscle group over 50%. In other words, if the selected muscle group was a primary muscle in an exercise, that exercise was excluded. This exclusion functionality didn’t apply to mobility and flexibility exercises that could also be problematic for a selected muscle group.
Solution: Mobility and flexibility exercises that involve excluded muscle groups will now also be excluded.
Challenge: For some popular exercises , we still showed old pictures of the start and end positions. The old pictures provide little user guidance on how to perform an exercise correctly, especially for free weight exercises.
Solution: We replaced more than 150 old exercise pictures with new videos to improve user guidance and the quality of each training plan.
Challenge: Some dumbbell, kettlebell and cable exercises had either too high or too low weight recommendations.
Solution: We trained Genius on more workout data tracked by users in the last month and achieved a significant improvement on these equipment-supported free weight exercises.
Challenge: On full body days, beginners, and beginner-intermediates, were often assigned EGYM Open Mode exercises that overlapped too much with the ones they already performed in their EGYM Circuit.
Solution: We’ve now improved the capabilities of Genius to recognize what exercises are being performed in the EGYM Circuit at a given gym, so that Genius prescribes EGYM Open Mode exercises that are mostly different from those in the Circuit.
Challenge: The EGYM+ training program (circuit and 'Auto' mode), the training mode, the training method and the visualization (in 'Individual') were set for your members. However, the suggested repetition numbers were not aligned with the training goals.
Solution: Not only the training method and visualization will be set on the Smart Strength machines in training mode 'Individual' but also the number of repetitions will be set, based on the training goal as follows (need for EGYM+ status):
Muscle building: Adaptive, 12 reps
Weight Loss: Regular, 20 reps
Athletic: Explonic, 17 reps
Body Toning: Negative, 15 reps
General Fitness: Regular, 20 reps
Rehab Fit: Negative, 15 reps
No EGYM+: Users without EGYM+ or without the training goals Muscle Building or Athletics will receive Regular (20 reps) instead as they do not have access to the advanced training methods.
Important note: This change only affects users starting Smart Strength for the first time. The number of repetitions will not be adjusted for existing Smart Strength users. Only the suggested training method and visualization will be adjusted.
We fixed a major bug that prevented us from respecting the weight increments of analog machines and free weights equipment.
We also fixed a bug that removed the weight recommendation guidance elements in the BMA that helped the members understand what the recommended weight (kg) meant e.g., each side, total.
2024 – CW39
Challenge: Previously, updating the information in a member's Genius preferences (e.g., changing included/excluded muscle group or equipment) led to an update of the training program or selected training method on Smart Strength, which caused a reset to the beginning of the program (1st phase) or predefined training method—even so, the training goal or training program in the member’s preferences did not change.
Solution: From now on, Smart Strength machines will only update the training program or selected training method if the member's training goal or training experience changes—other changes in the member's preferences do not cause an update of the experience on Smart Strength machines anymore.
Important note: The first-time entry of the training goal and experience will update the training on Smart Strength (start of a new training program cycle, change of training mode, or selected training method and visualization) to provide the user with a personalized experience based on the provided preferences.
Challenge: For some exercises (e.g., Barbell Squats, Dumbbell Bench Press etc.), our weight predictions are not as accurate as they could be.
Solution: We continuously add more tracking data from various types of users to as many exercises as we can, and re-train our AI model weekly with this new data.
Challenge: In some Genius workouts, it was possible to get assigned exercises for a single set only , regardless of the workout duration.
Solution: We increased the minimum number of sets per training method to 2 sets, except for exercises that are performed with the goal of increasing maximum strength. The minimum for these is now 3 sets.
Important note: This change is to be partially revisited soon, as we are working on an internal logic that would enable us to adjust the minimum number of sets, and the volume of sets per exercise, per experience level and workout duration.
2024 – CW37
This week, we focused on bug fixes and small but important improvements to further increase training plan quality.
Improvements include:
- Improved weight recommendations for many exercises
- Fixed machine settings for some machines with inverted scales, e.g. setting 1 was recommended for tall users instead of shorter users
- Consolidation of training volume which was distributed across very similar exercises, such as leg press and rowing exercises.
2024 – CW 36
Challenge: The health assessment and Genius preferences have overlapping questions, but are not updating each other automatically, which reduces trainer efficiency and creates frustration with repeating to ask the same information.
Solution: Now we prefill answers from Genius preferences to the health assessment. The trainer will have the option to edit before saving the result and getting a user signature.
Important note: No sync from health assessment to Genius preferences. Currently, it is only a unidirectional sync.
Challenge: Until now our working weight recommendations didn’t necessarily respect the minimum or maximum weight range of a given strength equipment available at your gym.
Solution: As well as suggesting precise weights for our list of partner equipment, respecting the exact workout weights that are available on stack machines, or can be achieved by combining weights, we now respect the minimum/maximum range of all given strength equipment.
Challenge: Previously, only the EGYM+ training program was set for members to start their workout according to their training goal. (EGYM+ booking for the member is required, otherwise the member can only work out with the Basic training program). On the Open Mode machines, the 'Auto' training mode is not suitable for members with more training experience, and there should be a more suitable personalization.
Solution: From now on, the Smart Strength machines in Open Mode will take into account the training experience as well as the training goal, which means that members will receive even more personalized training. In particular, this means that:
- The training mode is selected based on the experience level
- Level Beginner up to level Advanced: 'Auto' training mode with periodized training programs
- Above Advanced level: 'Individual' training mode with personal training settings
- The training visualization is also selected based on the experience level
- Up to Advanced level: guided with the curve
- From Experienced to Very Experienced level: free training with the bar
- The training method and number of repetitions in 'Individual' training mode are set as follows (requires EGYM+ status):
- Muscle building: Adaptive
- Weight loss: Regular
- Athletic: Explonic
- Body Toning: Negative
- General fitness: Regular
- Rehab Fit: Negative
- Good to know: Users without the EGYM+ and training goal Muscle Building or Athletic will use the Regular training method instead, as they do not have access to the advanced training methods.
- Adjustments can be made to the machine at any time. It is important that the changed setting is also used for training, otherwise the settings will not be saved.
Important note: The change is effective for all those who start with EGYM Genius from now on. Users who previously started with Genius will retain their training settings as before. Users who have previously used EGYM but not Genius will receive the updated training experience on Smart Strength according to the information in Genius.
What happens to existing Genius users when the trainer makes changes?
Changes to the training plan (e.g. exercises, weight settings, etc.) do not result in any changes for the Smart Strength machines. Changing the information in a member's preferences leads to an update of the training program, which is equivalent to a reset
Challenge: The suggested training weights after a strength test on the Smart Strength machines were not optimal for all users and were, therefore, sometimes increased or decreased by users. The aim is to recommend the optimal training weight after a strength test, which does not need to be adjusted if possible.
Solution: From now on, as soon as a member performs a strength test, the training weight is calculated on the Smart Strength machines using a new algorithm.
The adjustment aims to give members an even more personalized, suitable training weight. In principle, the suggested training weight will only change minimally for most members. Members with a higher maximum strength will be recommended a slightly lower training weight in the future, and those with a low maximum strength will receive a slightly higher training weight than before.
Important note: This change affects all members in the gym, regardless of whether they use Genius or not. The new calculation will be applied after each strength test, and existing training weights will not be adjusted.
2024 – CW35
Challenge: The difficulty level of some exercises made it difficult for less experienced members to complete the recommended training plans.
Solution: We have reviewed the exercises and assigned the correct level of difficulty to each exercise so that the exercise selection corresponds to the experience level of each member.
Challenge: Previously, Genius gave the training weight precisely based on kilograms, which led to confusion among members if the proposed training weight was not selectable.
Solution: Genius now recommends the exact workout weights that are available on stack machines or can be achieved by combining weights - based on the inventory in the business suite.
Challenge: Genius recommends very accurate weights for members with average strength levels, but the weight recommendations are too low for above-average strength members. The reason for this discrepancy is that the AI was trained with EGYM data primarily from beginners.
Solution: Genius is additionally trained with training data from very strong users (and we are constantly adding more training data). As a result, Genius now offers a more accurate weight recommendation even for members with above-average strength.
Challenge: Until now, the weight recommendations for Gym80 Sygnum machines have been significantly too high.
Solution: We have fixed a problem with the initial resistance measurements. As a result, the weight recommendations for these machines are now reliable.
Please also note our FAQ overview, in which you can find answers to all the most common questions about Genius.
2024 – CW34
Challenge: So far, the exercise ordering within a workout didn’t consistently follow widespread, and more generally accepted sport science principles. The reason was that the AI learned from many training plans which had very different ordering principles applied.
Solution: We taught the AI a generalky accepted exercise order:
- Mobility
- Strength - Free weights & cables
- Legs
- Upper Body
- Strength - Guided Machines
- Legs Upper
- Body
- Strength - Core (Machines + Free weights)
- Cardio
- Flexibility
Challenge: Set volume for a given muscle group(s) were often distributed across different but too similar exercises e.g., dumbbell bicep curls & barbell bicep curls, instead of being consolidated.
Solution: Genius no longer selects “too similar exercises” within a workout.
2024 – CW33
What does this mean for you and your members?
Up until now, only a few partner machines benefited from precise weight suggestions from our Genius AI. For most machines, the weight recommendations deviated by up to 30-50%. As of today, the whole fleet of partner equipment listed here will be integrated into our Genius AI, making the weight prescriptions much more precise.
* Note that supporting “vendor displayed weight increments” will come in a few weeks. This means that our current weight prescriptions might fall between increments that the member can adjust the machine to e.g., Machine leg extension @ 52 kg vs. 50 or 55 kg.
2024 – CW30
As previously mentioned, Genius now finally supports the workout duration question from the onboarding: “How long do you want to work out on average? This enables the trainer or member to select an average workout duration time that spans across 15-90 min+, with the generated training plan adapting to the newly selected workout duration*. The following exercise parameters are adapted to reduce or increase the workout duration:
- Rest times
- Number of sets per exercise
- Number of exercises per muscle group
- Exercise duration (for cardio exercises)
*Note that the workout duration time doesn’t consider the performance of warm-up sets on top of what is suggested.
2024 – CW29
Challenge: When displaying the recommended training weight for exercises with free weights, it was not clear whether this was the training weight including the weight of the bar or not, or whether the suggestion applied to one side or both sides.
Solution: In the workout tracking feature, the suggested exercise weights (kg/lbs) will now be accompanied by a guidance element under the weights’ column, to better guide users in using the correct exercise weight. The guidance element visualizes whether the suggested weight includes the weight of a bar and whether it is for one side or each side.
2024 – CW28
Bug: Users were assigned EGYM Smart Strength machines that were part of a gym’s EGYM circuit
Expected behavior (solved): Only EGYM machines which are in Open Mode are assigned in the TP as single exercises.
Bug: EGYM circuit is assigned in gyms without an EGYM circuit
Expected behavior (solved): EGYM circuit is not assigned in a gym without an EGYM circuit.
Machine Settings for all compatible vendors
The exercise instructions screen in your gym app now supports machine settings for all supported machine vendors. This means that we provide guidance on how to adjust a supported vendor machine to one’s biometrics.
New logic for ‘Split’ training
The reported problem was that Genius created workout ‘splits’ (push, pull, etc.) already at 2 workouts per week and that single muscle groups did not receive enough training volume. We changed the logic that the ‘split’ just happens later (around >3 workouts per week) and then split into cardio and strength days for training goals. The split logic depends on the training goal.
Note that these changes will come into effect when a new plan will be created. For example, a trainer creates a new plan (Genius for trainers), or a new plan is available for the member starting on Monday (Genius for members).
2024 – CW25
The Genius AI Coach now takes into account the following training plan preferences questions*, set during the onboarding flow on both the Fitness Hub, and the Trainer App:
Muscle focus
Increase the probability of having exercises that focus on the selected body regions
Muscle exclusion
Strength activities that primarily target the excluded muscle groups are excluded. Note that flexibility/mobility and cardio exercises are not taken into account here.
Equipment exclusion
Exclude/include selected. Note in cases where the user excludes all gym cardio exercises, outdoor cardio exercises will still be included in the plans. The user can still remove, or simply not perform these outdoor exercises. Note that we will still assign outdoor cardio exercises, in cases where all gym cardio exercises are excluded from the plan. The user can still delete it, or simply not perform it.
- Automatic inter-set rest timer that starts upon set-by-set tracking
- The inter-set rest time can be set by the Genius AI Coach, or the Trainer.
- The suggested inter-set rest period can be adjusted by the trainer or by the member, according to his/her needs, by clicking on the rest time icon of each exercise
Vendor line specific name will be added to the generic machine exercise name whenever possible and relevant, e.g., Machine Chest Press => Matrix Chest Press
